Keep Sliced Pears

Use antioxidants to store sliced pears and retain flavor and nutrition.

Pears are a sweet, juicy fruit with a tender flesh and grainy buttery texture. This conical-shaped fruit is available in several different varieties including Conference, Bosc, Bartlett and Anjou. Belonging to the same family as apples, pears oxidize and turn brown quickly once cut and exposed to oxygen. You can slow the oxidation process in sliced pears by using antioxidants to retain its flavor and nutrition.

Instructions

1. Dip the pear slices in a bowl containing lemon juice or orange juice to coat them thoroughly with the juices. These citrus juices are rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that slows the oxidation or browning process.

2. Place the sliced pears in an airtight container, or wrap them thoroughly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap.

3. Store in the refrigerator for around three days. Keep the pears away from strong-smelling foods, as they can absorb the flavors of these foods and deteriorate in taste.
