Store Fresh Limes

Store Fresh Limes

Limes may not be a sweet snacking fruit, but fresh limes are a beneficial pantry item to keep on hand for baking and cooking. According to the George Mateljan Foundation for the World's Healthiest Foods, limes contain many antioxidants and flavonoids, which can be instrumental in halting some cancer cell divisions. Limes have a characteristic sourness that impart a delicious taste to a variety of recipes. When you purchase fresh limes, store them at room temperature or in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them.

Instructions

1. Place whole, fresh limes in a small bowl. Place the bowl on a countertop, out of direct sunlight. Sunlight will make limes change from green to yellow and may affect the way they taste. Keep limes at room temperature for up to one week.

2. Wrap fresh limes in plastic food storage bags and seal the opening. Place the bagged limes into the refrigerator to store them for up to two weeks. Limes may stay fresh longer than two weeks in the refrigerator; however, their flavor may weaken.

3. Juice fresh limes and freeze the lime juice into ice cube trays. After the lime juice freezes, remove the cubes from the trays and place them in plastic food storage bags. Freeze the lime juice for up to three months.

4. Zest lime peels and allow the zest to dry at room temperature for several days. Place the dried lime zest in a small glass jar and keep it at room temperature in a cupboard.
