Oven Bake Flavored Pecans

Pecans are the only native American tree nut.

Bowls of nuts are a usual snack at parties and get-togethers. If you have tired of the standard peanut, opt for something different for your next event. Instead of spending more than you need to in stores, buy the nuts raw in bulk and make your own snack. Oven-baked pecans are a heathy alternative to processed nuts, and the cinnamon-sugar seasoning can be exchanged with other flavors to suit your tastes. Experiment with spicy, sweet or salty, and enjoy serving something different every time.

Instructions

1. A shallow baking pan works best.

Place shelled pecans in a single layer on an ungreased baking sheet. Situate them as close together as possible. Keep the nuts ridged-side-up for best results.

2. Use real butter rather than margarine for best taste.

Pour the heaping tsp. of sugar and 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon into the microwave-safe bowl. Add the 3 tbsp. of butter, and microwave for 15 to 20 seconds or until the butter melts. Mix the melted butter, cinnamon and sugar together thoroughly.

3. Oven temperatures vary; turn the pan in the oven for even baking, if necessary.

Spoon the butter mixture over the pecans, coating them liberally. Place the baking sheet in a 325 degree pre-heated oven. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, until the butter bubbles and the pecans are toasted. Allow the nuts to cool completely before removing them from the pan.
