Tone down the spiciness of chili with creamy flavors.
Chili becomes too spicy for some palates when ingredients such as chili peppers or chili powder are added in amounts out-of-proportion to the rest of the ingredients. Decreasing the spiciness of chili with cream-based ingredients allows the consistency of the chili to remain the same while toning down the flavor. You can reduce the heat of your chili without having to start from scratch or purchase more vegetables or beans to disperse the spice.
Instructions
1. Lower the stove top heat to medium-low.
2. Add 1/3 cup of peanut butter or butter. Stir the chili to disperse the peanut butter or butter.
3. Taste the chili to test the spiciness. Add 1/3-cup increments of peanut butter or butter to continue reducing the spicy taste until the chili reaches your desired flavor.
4. Ladle the chili into bowls. Stir 1 tsp. of cheddar cheese into each bowl or sprinkle cheese on top of the chili.
5. Add 1 tbsp. of sour cream to top each bowl of chili. The added dairy will further tone down the spiciness.
6. Provide buttered bread with your chili to sop up the liquid and reduce the heat of the spices. Make milk or yogurt-based smoothies to serve as a beverage to help mellow the spicy flavor, if desired.
