List Of Core Foods

Core foods are a perfect way to lose weight and still feel full.

Core foods are foods rich in vitamins and minerals. They contain higher amounts of nutrients than most carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Core foods are often high in fiber and low in calories, meaning that they make people feel full quicker, which is ideal for those who are trying to lose weight. Additionally, by eliminating foods with empty calories, and targeting core foods instead, people can save a lot of money at the grocery store.

Cereals and Grains

The valuable cereals to target are the ones that are gluten free, such as those made with buckwheat and millet. Gluten free is a good alternative to wheat, because it is not fattening yet is still extremely filling. Both these grains are high in protein. Quinoa and oats are also good choices. Purchase whole wheat bread only if the flour is unbleached, otherwise it is largely stripped of its nutrition and healing potential.

Fruits and Vegetables

Focus on dark green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and cabbage. These vegetables are immune stimulants, which should boost the energy lost by eating fewer calories. Soups should be made with water, or vegetable broth, instead of adding milk. Avoid all fruit and vegetable products that add sugars, such as vegetable juices and cocktails.

Nuts and Legumes

Nuts and legumes are great snacks for energy, fiber and protein. Hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts help lower cholesterol and fight against digestive problems like irritable bowl syndrome. The best legumes to focus on are beans, such as kidney or navy beans. Beans are easy to digest, but need to be cooked thoroughly for 15 minutes. Soy is also a core food, but it is often genetically modified and void of health benefits.

Meat and Dairy

Red meat is beneficial for its levels of zinc and iron but should be eaten in moderation because of fat intake. Lean turkey and oily fish is the best alternative for the digestive system and should be consumed on a regular basis. Milk products are a good source of protein, but limit them because they are difficult to digest, and they provide the same mucus-inducing problems as gluten-enriched foods.
