Homemade Chili Spice Blends







To add more heat to a chili blend, mix in cayenne pepper.


Chili powder was first blended in Texas in the mid-1800s. This spice blend is usually approximately 75 percent ground chillies with an assortment of other ingredients such as oregano, cumin, garlic powder, cayenne and onion powder. You can use chili powder in many other dishes besides chili such as BBQ sauces, marinades, rubs, soups and corn bread. Creating a homemade chili spice blend is a simple economical method to mix unique flavor profiles and ensure freshness of the product.


Instructions


1. Measure spices into large bowl in the following quantities for approximately a half-cup of chili spice blend:


5 tsp. chili powder


1 tbsp. crushed red pepper


1 tbsp. dried minced onion


1 tbsp. dried minced garlic


1 tbsp. white sugar


2 tsp. ground cumin








1 tsp. dried parsley


1 tsp. salt


1 tsp. paprika


2 tsp. dried basil


1/2 tsp. ground black pepper


If you want a hotter chili blend, then add 1/2 tsp. of cayenne.


2. Stir spices until very well combined and a uniform color.


3. Pour the chili spice blend into a container using a funnel.


4. Seal the container and then label the spice blend taking care to put the contents as well as the date.


5. Store in a dry cool place to ensure a long shelf life.
