Remove Mold From Cheese

Cut mold out of hard cheeses with a paring knife.

Mold is a type of microscopic fungus that is often found growing on plants or animals. When you see a spotting of mold on a food product, the mold is not just on the surface. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, mold "roots" grow into food, especially when the growth is thick. Many cheeses are made with mold. However, other molds can still attack the cheese. It is possible to cut the mold out of hard cheeses because the mold cannot penetrate very deep.

Instructions

1. Position the blade of the knife at least 1 inch away from the mold. Do not touch the blade of the knife to the actual mold.

2. Cut around the mold in a sawing motion, keeping 1 inch away from the edge of the mold spot. Make sure to cut into the cheese at least 1 inch deep as well.

3. Pull the moldy chunk out of the cheese and throw it in the trash.

4. Wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap, ensuring that no part of the cheese is exposed. Place the wrapped cheese in the refrigerator.
