Use Mason Jars For Drinking With Decorative Caps

Mason and other canning jars are common in many households, and turning them into drinking containers can be a fun and casual way to use the jars. Special decorative rims have been manufactured by Mason and other canning-jar brands that allow drinking from the jars without the discomfort of putting the threaded jar lip to your mouth. The decorative rims are usually plastic and come in a variety of colors to complement your kitchen or dining décor.

Instructions

Use After Canning

1. Wash jars well in hot, soapy water. Put them in the dishwasher, or boil in a pan of water for ten minutes, to sanitize the jars' interiors and exteriors.

2. Remove jars from boiling water or dishwasher and allow to cool by placing them upside-down on a clean towel. Dry thoroughly with a clean, lint-free towel.

3. Inspect the jars for chips or cracks by holding them to the light and checking all sides, threads and bottoms.

4. Place a decorative flat on the top of each jar and the ring around each rim. Tighten the ring by screwing it down, using care not to over-tighten.

5. After use, remove the decorative ring from the jar to prevent bacteria from being trapped underneath.

6. Place plastic rings in dishwasher if packaging indicates that they are dishwasher-safe. Rings can be washed in hot soapy water and allowed to air-dry if not safe for machine-washing, or if a dishwasher is not available.

Using Drinking Jars for Canning

7. Inspect each jar by holding it up to light. Look for deformities, cracks, or chips in the glass jars. Do not use damaged jars for canning.

8. Sterilize the jars in boiling water for ten minutes, ensuring that each is surrounded on all sides and around the top with at least one inch of boiling water.

9. Remove the jars from boiling water, using tongs, and place them upside-down on a clean towel to air-dry and cool.
