You can replace olive oil with sesame oil in certain recipes.
One of the best parts of cooking is that toying with various ingredients in recipes, and switching things around can lead to amazing, and unexpected flavor combinations. This is certainly true when substituting sesame oil for olive oil. However, certain precautions should be taken to achieve the best results when incorporating sesame oil into a recipe.
Instructions
1. Select recipes in which the flavor of the sesame oil will complement the dish, rather than taint it. An obvious place to use sesame oil is in stir fries and other Asian recipes. You can also substitute sesame oil for olive oil in salad dressing recipes. Just consider the taste you are looking for in the end product and whether sesame oil will fit in.
2. Use the sesame oil sparingly. Sesame oil has a very distinct, bold flavor that is slightly nutty, and too much of this flavor can overpower dishes. It is best to use only a fraction of the oil required in the original recipe.
3. Supplement a neutral-tasting oil such as canola for the remaining oil, if necessary. If you are adding the oil to a recipe that demands a certain amount of oil such as a salad dressing, use only a small amount of sesame oil and replace the rest with the neutral tasting oil. In recipes that only require a small amount of oil such as a stir fry or a saut , you may be able to get by without any additional oil.
4. Keep the smoke point in mind. Much like olive oil, sesame oil has a low smoke point of only about 350 degrees F. Do not use high heat when using sesame oil or you will risk it taking on a bitter taste that could ruin the overall dish.
