Start Longterm Food Storage

Stack older food items toward the front to use first.

Long-term food storage provides you with the security of having the essentials your family needs in case of emergencies. Before starting a long-term storage, access the area you want to store your food. Make sure it has the proper shelving and temperature for food storage. After accessing your storage area, wait for sales on products your family consumes so you can save money as you prepare your long-term food repository.

Instructions

1. Install shelving in a basement, pantry or cellar to hold the food items. Use wood or plastic shelves and allow for enough room between the shelves to stack two cans or jars.

2. Check your local supermarket ads. Purchase six to seven of each canned food item your family eats when it goes on sale. As you purchase more of the same item, set the newer items towards the back, moving the older ones to the front to use first.

3. Can fresh vegetables such as green beans and tomatoes. Grow your own or purchase from a farmer's market. Write the year on top of the lid so you consume the oldest first.

4. Purchase cuts of meat when on sale and store in a stand-alone freezer. Use the meat within six to 12 months, replacing as you use it.

5. Buy flour, sugar, salt and cooking oil in bulk. Purchase large quantities of rice and pasta and place in airtight containers. Buy powdered milk, along with instant coffee or tea.

6. Wash out your milk gallon jugs and fill with filtered water. Store at least 10 to 15 jugs of water. Replace the water after six months of storage.
