What Environment Will Cause Mold to Grow Faster in Bread and Cheese?
Many people are dismayed to open their refrigerator doors and find what was once a perfectly fine piece of cheese or bread loaf covered in white or green fuzzy mold. Mold can grow in almost any environment, though it reproduces faster under certain circumstances.
Temperature Conditions
Although mold can grow in cold areas, such as in the refrigerator, it prefers hot or warm conditions. A loaf of bread in a plastic bag on a hot summer's day is a perfect spot for mold to grow.
Other Factors
The amount of moisture in the environment also determines how fast the mold can grow. Mold cells grow quickly in a humid environment and on foods, such as bread and cheese, that contain a lot of moisture. The more water the food contains, the deeper the mold can grow in it.
Prevention/Solution
While it may be impossible to fully prevent mold, you can take some steps to keep it off your food. Store bread in a dry, cool place in a breathable container, such as a paper bag. Cheese should stay in the refrigerator wrapped in plastic wrap.
