Benefits Of Red Wine

Benefits of Red Wine

You've probably heard something about the potential health benefits of red wine, but is it true, or just another health fad? It is true: A glass or two of red wine every day can reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer and lower your cholesterol. However, most doctors would not advise you to go pick up a bottle to drink along with your muiltivitamins. On the other hand, if you already do drink wine, maybe it's not such a bad habit after all.

Fact or Fiction?

Recent studies have shown that some ingredients in red wine may have health benefits, if consumed in moderation. This seems counterintuitive because alcoholic drinks contain toxins that break down many of body's internal organs. News programs cite the "French Paradox"--the French consume more wine than any other culture, along with relatively fatty foods, but the people have a comparatively low rate of heart disease. Is red wine really good for the heart?

In Moderation

Studies show high levels of consumption have adverse effects on the heart, liver, kidneys, etc. Those consuming moderate amounts, however, have a lower risk of heart disease than nondrinkers. Moderate typically means one glass per day for women and two per day for men. Red wine has a high level of polyphenols (mostly from the grapes), as well as resveratrol, both chemical substances that protect the cardiovascular system. These substances are also antioxidants.

What Else Can Wine Do for Me?

Red wine is also believed to lower cholesterol, prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of kidney stones.

Wine made from the cabernet sauvignon grape may decrease chances of Alzheimer's disease.

Nonalcoholic Options

Of course, you can get the health benefits of red wine without consuming alcohol. Grape seed extract and resveratrol are available in pill form to take as supplements.

Warnings

Red wine should be consumed in moderation as described above. Excess consumption can lead to liver failure, kidney disease, alcoholism and other debilitating conditions.
