How to disassemble a sunbeam mixmaster

disassemble a Sunbeam Mixmaster

I've need to take my mixmaster apart for cleaning and rewiring. Its a model 12. I've looked it over and except for the two screws by the beaters and some very hard to get at screws under the handle, there is no obvious way of taking it apart. I thought I'd ask for suggestions before attempting anything on my own. Anyone done this before? Thanks Hi adouce, - try taking out the screws you can see, then you'll get an idea if anything else is holding it together. Often there are small screws under labels on small appliances like this , usually at end of handle or suchlike places. Do it Right - Do it once. Thanks, If I don't get any advice from someone who's done it before that's what I'll do. I'm out of town and won't get a chance to do so for a while but I'll report back on what happens. I also have a model 12 (and a 7, and a 9), and have only torn it apart enough to re-grease the beater gears. To do this take a small screwdriver and carefully pry off the large plastic disk with the S on it on the front of the motor housing. Underneath the disk you will see a single screw. Once you take this out you can remove the handle assembly. This will reveal the beater gearbox plate. Carefully remove the thin wire that disengages the beaters (be sure to note how it will go back together). There are four small screws holding the gearbox cover on. After removing these you can take off the cover and reveal the gearbox. There should be about a tablespoon of grease in the gearbox (at this point the grease in your machine is probably blackish brown with a foul burnt smell - unless it had been serviced regularly). This grease should be replaced about once a year or so - use a light appliance grease for this. Be sure to remove all of the old grease before replacing. Generally a de-greaser like formula 409 works well for this. I wouldn't use a degreaser on the thin, squareish gasket, though. The degreaser may dry it out too much and make it crack. Just put a fresh film of grease on both sides of the gasket to ensure a tight seal and you should be okay. I have found that by simply re-greasing my machines I increase their functionality by at least 50%. There is also a screw under the smaller plastic disk on the black speed control dial (this disc will also pry off). However, I do not know enough about electronics to want to mess with what I found under there ....but perhaps you are braver (or more knowledgeable) than I. Someday I will run into a non-functioning machine at a flea market and then I will tear into it with vigor - I just hate to potentially deastroy my functioning machines. Well, that about exhausts my knowledge - I hope it helps! Oh, one more thing - there are a series of small holes in the top of the motor housing (I think there are four) - these are oiling points. Just put a drop or two of machine oil in them every 6 months or so and you should be good to go. -do it herself ^ good post, doitherself. I've taken these apart also. I restored an old stainless one and basically did cleaning and checking on 2 others. You do have to pry off the metal logo thing, but some 2 sided tape will put it back on. It was a bit confusing in there, but just watch closely what goes where and it will be pretty obvious. I've only purchased used ones, and was always blown away by how much crap was in there - dried bread dough and such. Have an old toothbrush ready! I used light sewing oil inside mine on the pieces. I don't remember the tablespoon of grease, hmmm... I may have to take mine apart again and check out that gearbox! Gina
