Kenmore elite heavy duty dryer no heat

Kenmore Elite Heavy Duty Dryer - No Heat

Our dryer is a 7.5 capacity model 101.63942101. Purchased in Feb 2003. The heat stopped and the timer did not advance (I assume because it was not sensing any drying. Too new for this kind of thing. We read some things on applianceaid.com and as was suggested there was going to take off the back and check some thermostats and the heating coil, etc. Problem was the back is welded on. I could not easily get the front off and did not want to break anything or go thru the front to get to the thermostats and coils that were now in an unknow location (to me at least), possibly in the back. So I called a repair guy. On the phone he said it might be the thermostats or heater coil and would cost $180-220 depending on the problem. My wife was here when he arrived and the first thing he did was check (with a voltmeter) the top control counsel (not the thermostats or the heating coil). He said it was the heater relay in the counsel, but he did not have the part. He could order it and try to get back next week. We paid him $70 for this. We just ordered the part from Sears and with expedited shipping it will cost $44 (30 for part and 14 for the shipping--it will still take until 26 Sep). It looks very easy to replace. Unscrew two screws, remember which four wires go where, unplug everything and then plug the new one in. We will give that a shot and hope it works. The repair guy would have charged an additional $111 (still within his original estimate). To get into the counsel, pull off the two plastic side pieces, force them gently, they are mainly attached at the top of the plastic. Then under those plastic pieces is one screw on each side at the bottom. Unscrew them and tilt the cousel back. Inside ours, was a Diagnostic Guide that provides lots of trouble shooting info. Why hidden in here instead of in the manual? Beats me, but probably good for the repair guys. Hopefully, this will work out fine without trouble. This site would have got you thru the testing and fixing stage... http://www.applianceaid.com/evenheat.html Thanks, but the latest on this is the repair guy can actually get to us today (not next week). My wife wants this done asap so we are going to have him do it, return the part we ordered when it arrives and eat the shipping and handling. Grrrrrr. As for the applianceaid.com site, I think I found what you were referring too about half way down the page, but being so ignorant about all of this, I probably never would have figured it out or found that string. I did look all over applianceaid (I thought) and kept coming to the one site about taking the back off the dryer and checking the thermostats and coils. That was clearly in relation to a different kenmore dryer since you can't take the back off our model. I probably wouldn't have even figured out get into the counsel since I didn't want to pull so hard on something that I broke it (pull this way it pops right out, pull that way and you break it) Anyway, live and learn--and pay thru the nose. Hopefully, this post and your link will help someone else. I just had this same problem with the same dryer. Thanks to you guys for giving me a perfect walkthrough on fix it. One thing I might add, though, is that the relay is available in a lot of other places than through Sears for thirty bucks. I bought mine on ebay (search for 3405281) for $12 delivered, then found a link on the Tyco website (which is the company that actually makes Potter Brumfield parts), where their distributors sell them for as little as $3. I don't know if they will sell just one piece directly to an individual customer or not, but it's worth a look. Like I said, I found the site after I'd already bought one on ebay, so I didn't try. Search part number T9AP1D52-48 on tycoelectronics.com.
