Serve Dessert Wine At Christmas

Classic Chrismas desserts include spiced pumpkin, sweet potato, pecan and apple pies and puddings such as traditional plum, custard and bread. Dessert wines are just as delicious and just as varied, and will finish off your holiday dinner in memorable style.

Instructions

1. Pair moderately sweet dessert wines such as Muscat with pumpkin pie or bread pudding.

2. Combine sorbets, chocolate and fruity desserts with sparkling Gamay, tawny Port or Madeira. Rich desserts made from bitter chocolates are delicious combined with vintage Port. Milder Ports or dark berry wine work well with more moderate chocolate flavors.

3. Serve champagne or sparkling wine with almost any dessert, except for desserts with dark, bitter chocolate.

4. Serve your guests Sauterne, Riesling, iced apple wine or Gewurztraminer with apple pie or plum cake.

5. Pair gingersnaps, gingerbread or pumpkin pie with Madeira, sherry, tawny Port or Gewurztraminer.

6. Combine Christmas cheesecake, Scottish shortbread or other buttery, creamy desserts with a delicious ice wine or fortified blueberry or blackberry wine.

7. Select a Port wine, sweet sherry or a delicious aged sherry that will echo the spicy flavor of traditional Christmas pumpkin pie.
