The 2000 Ford Taurus depends on the fuel filter to remove sediment and other foreign debris from the gasoline before it reaches the fuel injection system. Allowing this debris to enter the fuel rail and injectors leads to decreased fuel economy and ultimately costly repair bills. Since you can purchase a new fuel filter for dramatically less than the price of a new fuel injector, it's just good sense to replace the filter at every 15,000-mile interval. Anyone with basic auto repair skills can change the fuel filter on a 2000 Ford Taurus in less than 25 minutes.
Instructions
1. Open the Taurus' hood. Slide a drain pan under the engine and center it at the back of the engine below the fuel filter.
2. Disconnect the inlet and outlet fuel lines on the fuel filter with a fuel line disconnect tool. Pull the lines off the filter by hand.
3. Slide the old filter out of the retaining clamp and put it in the drain pan. Slip the new filter into the clamp with the flow arrow pointing towards the fuel rail.
4. Place the inlet and outlet fuel lines on the new filter by hand. Push the retaining clips down carefully.
5. Turn the ignition on. Wait 10 seconds and turn it back off. Repeat this once more before starting the Taurus to re-prime the fuel system.
Tips Warnings
Never work on a fuel system while smoking or around open flames.
