Prepare Dried Chickpeas For Cooking

Soak chickpeas to make them soft and edible.

Before enjoying dried chickpeas, otherwise known as garbanzo beans, you must soak them until they are soft and tender. After preparing the chickpeas, you can add them to a variety of dishes such as salads, soups and stews. You can also blend chickpeas, tahini, fresh garlic, olive oil and lemon juice to create a healthy and satiating hummus dip to enjoy with pita bread or vegetables. Buy the dried chickpeas in bulk to save money and ensure that you always have some on hand.

Instructions

1. Pour the dried chickpeas into a bowl and pick through them to remove any debris or small stones. Place the chickpeas into a colander and rinse them under cool, running water.

2. Transfer the chickpeas to a heavy saucepan. Pour 3 cups of water per 1 cup of beans into the pan and stir to blend.

3. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Boil the chickpeas for two minutes and remove the pan from the heat.

4. Cover the saucepan with a lid and allow the chickpeas to rest for 1 to 2 hours, or until they are soft.

5. Drain the soaked chickpeas in a colander over a sink and add them to your favorite recipe.
