Make a simple tulle tutu for a ballerina costume.
You can make a tutu for a ballerina or fairy princess Halloween costume for a child or adult with practically no previous sewing experience. A tutu is easy to make and you can customize the skirt to coordinate with the colors of the rest of the Halloween costume. Use a single color of tulle for the tutu or use multiple colors and make a pattern with the strips of tulle and then embellish the skirt with silk flowers or imitation gemstones for some extra flair.
Instructions
1. Measure the circumference of the tutu wearer's waist around her natural waistline, just above the navel. Subtract 2 inches from this measurement and cut a piece of 3/4 inch wide elastic to this length.
2. Overlap ¼ inch of the short edges of the elastic and sew the elastic together. Double back over the stitches two or three times to make sure the elastic is joined securely.
3. Measure from the natural waist to the length you would like the skirt. Cut pieces of 6 inch wide tulle to twice this length. Start with about 50 pieces of the tulle. You may need to cut extra lengths later. For a child, you can make the tutu approximately 12 inches long, which requires 24 inch long lengths of tulle.
4. Fold one piece of tulle in half over the elastic and tie it in a tight knot to secure it to the elastic. Fold another piece of tulle in half over the elastic and tie it in a tight knot next to the first knot. Continue until the entire elastic is lined with the tulle.
5. Cut a 12 inch long piece of 1½ inch wide ribbon and tie it into a bow. Sew the center of the back of the bow over top of the joined ends of the elastic to make sure the joint is hidden.
6. Add embellishments if you are making a tutu for a fairy costume. Sew small silk flowers onto random spots on the skirt or glue imitation gemstones on in the same manner.
