Homemade Fly Trap With A Pickle Bucket

Use apple slices as bait in a fly trap.

An old pickle bucket can be the perfect tool for a homemade fly trap because fruit flies are attracted to the smell of pickles and your bucket may still emit these smells. Pickle buckets are also tall and the flies will have a harder time finding their way out once inside. If your home or an outside area is infested with fruit flies, you will most likely have good success with this trap.

Instructions

1. Place fruit, such as apple, lime or banana slices, or an inch or so of apple cider vinegar, in the pickle bucket -- especially if the bucket no longer smells of pickle juice. Even if the bucket does still smell, adding an extra scent may help attract more fruit flies.

2. Wrap plastic wrap securely around the rim of the bucket. Tie it snugly with twine or string. It should be tight enough that you can see clearly into the bucket.

3. Poke several holes in the plastic wrap with a sharp knife. They should be small, but big enough for the flies to fly through to follow the scent into the bucket and then have a difficult time finding the way out.

4. Release the caught flies outside away from your doorways and reapply the plastic wrap as necessary. If you're trapping flies in your garden or yard, release somewhere else, such as some nearby woods.
