Cook Glutinous Rice

A bamboo steamer can be used to steam your rice.

Glutinous rice, commonly referred to as sticky rice, is short-grained and has a gluey consistency when cooked. Glutinous rice has a different composition from other varieties and must be prepared in its own fashion. Begin making the rice 6 hours before you need to cook your meal, as it must soak before the steaming process. The final product will be sticky, soft rice, which will hold any shape you mold it into.

Instructions

1. Pour the glutinous rice into a mixing bowl. Add enough water to the bowl to cover the rice. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave it at room temperature for 6 hours.

2. Place a large pot over high heat and set a bamboo steamer in the bottom. If the steamer does not fit inside the pot, the rice will not cook properly. Pour enough water into the pot to come up to the level of the slotted area of the bamboo steamer.

3. Lay a piece of cheesecloth over the slotted section in the bottom of the bamboo steamer. Pour the soaked glutinous rice onto the cheesecloth and cover the pot with a lid.

4. Steam the glutinous rice for 20 minutes. Remove the pot from the heat. Allow the rice to set for 10 minutes before removing it from the steamer.
