Make Sour Cream

Sour cream is a common kitchen pantry staple used in many households for baked goods and sauces. Sour cream further adds texture and flavor to many recipes. It is a traditional ingredient in Eastern European, German and Russian cuisine. It is possible to make your own sour cream at home in as little as one day.

Instructions

1. Pour the active fresh cultured buttermilk into a clean quart Mason jar. Add the fresh heavy cream to the jar. Screw the lid on tight and shake the jar for 3 minutes to mix it thoroughly.

2. Write the date and the words "Sour Cream" on the lid with a black felt pen.

3. Set the sour cream mixture in a warm, safe place where it will not be disturbed and can come to room temperature or 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Let it sit for 24 hours.

4. Remove the lid and dip a spoon into the cream. If it is thick and clings to the spoon, the sour cream is done. Replace the lid and store the sour cream in your refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
