Make Homemade Gumballs

Make homemade gumballs in your own kitchen.

Make your own gumballs as a project to do with your kids, or as a confectionary experiment. You can make gumballs to chew yourself and have on hand, or make them as party favors or gifts. Gumballs are not as difficult to make as they might seem. Even kids can get involved in the process to learn how gum is made. You can find all of the ingredients at your local craft store in the candy-making section, or even at the grocery store.

Instructions

1. Pour 1 cup of powdered sugar into a microwave-safe mixing bowl.

2. Put your fist into the center of the powdered sugar to make a crater in the middle of it. Pour 1 oz. of bubblegum base into the crater.

3. Put the bowl in the microwave for 15 seconds on a medium-high setting. If you do not have a microwave with a power adjustment, regular power is fine.

4. Remove the bowl carefully from the microwave with an oven mitt and set it on your counter or table.

5. Poke the gum base center with a wooden spoon. If the base is not mushy and softened, microwave it at 15-second intervals until it is.

6. Add 1 1/2 tsp. of corn syrup into the bowl and microwave it for 15 more seconds. Carefully remove it.

7. Mix the contents of the bowl with your wooden spoon until they are almost completely mixed.

8. Pour 1/2 oz. of bubblegum flavor into the bowl and mix the contents until the consistency is too thick to stir. Finish mixing by kneading the mixture with your hands.

9. Lay a sheet of wax paper on your workspace and sprinkle it with powdered sugar.

10. Lift the lump of gum out of the bowl and place it onto the wax paper and rip it into small pieces. Roll the pieces in your hands to make balls and let them dry on the wax paper for about an hour. Sprinkle them with powdered sugar and store them in a zippered food storage bag.
