Cook Potatoes







You can do many things with potatoes, eating them alone or as part of another dish. Potatoes come in different varieties and sizes for all your cooking needs.


Instructions


1. Boil whole baby potatoes in water that just covers the potatoes. Or cut large potatoes into pieces and boil. Cook until soft. For potato soup, add sliced onions to the water and boil until tender. Pour out ? the water, add a bit of milk, margarine and salt to taste.


2. Slice potatoes and layer the bottom of a glass dish or metal pan with potato slices. Add a layer of onion slices and a layer of white sauce. Keep layering the potatoes, onions and sauce until the dish is almost full. Grate cheese on the top layer. Cover and cook in a moderate oven until potatoes and onions are soft. Take the cover off to brown the top.








3. Mash boiled potatoes with milk and butter until smooth. Serve hot. For a tastier mashed potato, add garlic or substitute the milk with broth. Mash cooked sweet potatoes to make a dessert called sweet potato pie. Add pecans and brown sugar to the potatoes. Pour into a pan and bake for 30 minutes or until bubbly. Serve with your main meal or as a dessert.


4. Cut raw potatoes into long pieces. Fry them in hot oil on the stove or in a deep fryer to make French fries. Make home fries by frying potato pieces in a frying pan in oil with onion.


5. Bake whole potatoes in their skins until tender when pierced with a fork. Cut in half when done. Add toppings like butter, cheese, chives or bacon. You can also bake a potato in the microwave. Pierce the potato with a fork several times before cooking and cook according to microwave instructions.


6. Roast potatoes in the oven. Peel potatoes and cut into chunks. Cook uncovered in a pan with a small amount of oil, or margarine. Cook on high heat until potatoes are crunchy on the outside and tender inside.


7. Grate several raw potatoes, add flour and grated onion to make potato pancakes. Combine mixture into patties. Cook in a small amount of oil until brown and crispy.
