Homemade Fried Apple Pies

Fried food and desserts are loved by people everywhere. Homemade fried apple pies combine the best of both worlds. Each recipe has different set of ingredients and cooking times.

Ingredients

If you plan on making your own dough, use flour and cubes of fat, such as lard, shortening, butter or combinations. Some recipes call for milk and eggs , and sometimes ice-cold water. Note the ingredients and measure them before starting. Once you're done forming the dough, roll it out into a thin sheet using a rolling pin. It is recommended you do so on a surface sprinkled with flour to prevent sticking.

For the filling, you'll need apples. The sweetness of the apples will be left up to you. Depending on the recipe, you'll also need sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract or bean, and salt. Before filling the pie dough, cook the filling. This softens the apples and gives them additional flavor. Generally, butter, sugar and cinnamon are used in the fililng. Some recipes call for additional liquids, such as apple cider, apple and orange juice.

There are also premade apple pie filling and dough. However, you'll lose the control you have over what goes into your pie unless you use fresh, separate ingredients that you assemble yourself.

Assembling the Pies

Since you'll be frying the pies, make small hand-held pies instead of one large pie. Once the dough is rolled, cut out circles about 5 to 8 inches in diameter.

Place a small amount of your filling onto one half of each circle, then fold over the dough so the edges meet. Crimp the edges by pinching with your fingers or with a fork.

Frying

Use a saucepan, cast iron skillet, heavy pot or deep fryer. Recipes require different amounts of frying oil, such as canola, vegetable or peanut oil, ranging from a 1 to 2 qts. Recipe also call for a different oil temperatures ranging from 350 to 360 degrees.

Once you've filled your frying vessel with the proper amount of oil and heated it to the correct temperature, place two to three pies in the oil at a time so as not to overcrowd the vessel. In recipes that use shallower amounts of oil, you'll cook each side until golden brown. For full-immersion frying, remove the pies when golden brown all around.

Remove the pies to a draining rack or a plate of paper towels to rid the pies of excess oil. From here, you can serve the pies however you'd like.

Serving

Try the following serving suggestions:

Sprinkle the pies with powdered sugar or toss them in a bowl of cinnamon sugar
