Is Wild Yam The Same As Mexican Yam

The Wild Yam and Mexican Yam are the same thing; they are both names for a plant native to North America that is believed to be a homeopathic treatment for a variety of ailments. While the effectiveness of the plant is questionable, it is considered safe for adults to consume.

Names

Wild yam goes by multiple names, including Mexican Yam, Wild Mexican Yam, American Yam, Colic Root and Devil's Bones.

Uses

The roots of the Wild Yam are used to make medicine. Wild Yam has been believed to be a treatment for indigestion, nerve pain, gallbladder problems, menstrual difficulties, rheumatoid arthritis and even as an oral birth control.

Birth Control

The misconception that Wild Yam can be used to prevent pregnancy likely stems from the plant's history as a source of inexpensive progesterone for birth control pills during the mid 1900s. However, there is no evidence that Wild Yam can be converted to hormones in the human body.

Menstrual Difficulties

There is no strong scientific proof to support the claim that Wild Yam eases menstrual difficulties, including hot flashes associated with menopause. Some companies manufacture a Wild Yam cream meant to be applied to the skin; the effectiveness of creams is also unsupported.

Cholesterol

Early studies have shown Wild Yam can decrease low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides, while increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL), according to Medline Plus. However, the website warns, more studies in this area are needed.
