Sliced apples become a crispy snack in the microwave.
Apple chips are a healthy alternative to the deep-fried potato chips we tend to reach for when we get the urge to snack. There is no need to visit a health-food store to pay for premade apple chips that have been sitting on a shelf, though. With a little time and patience, you can have a healthy snack by making your own apple chips, seasoned and sweetened just the way you like them, right in your own microwave.
Instructions
1. Slice the apples as thinly as possible using the knife, mandoline slicer or vegetable peeler. The thinner the slices, the crisper the chips will be.
2. Stir the apple slices in the mixing bowl with the water, sweetener and any seasonings you have chosen. Toss the slices well, so that they are evenly coated.
3. Place the slices on the microwave-safe dish. If you are not using a silicone baking sheet, apply a very thin, even coat of cooking spray to the dish before adding the apple slices. Arrange the slices in a single layer for uniform, attractive chips, or pile them on top of each other if you don't mind them sticking together.
4. Microwave the chips in one- to three-minute bursts, watching them closely as they cook to prevent them from burning. Depending on the wattage of your microwave, you may need to adjust the power setting, because the higher the power of the microwave, the faster the water will cook out of the chips. Lower the power and open the microwave door to allow steam to escape between bursts if the chips do not appear to be cooking evenly.
5. Remove the chips from the microwave when they are slightly curled at the edges and dotted with brown spots. If any chips are still tough and chewy, return them to the microwave for another cooking burst. Monitor
