Don't let your peaches go to waste.
Peaches are a delicious fruit that remain plentiful during the summer months. Sadly, peaches rot quickly and must be eaten within three days of being brought home from the market. This creates a dilemma if it is only Tuesday and you want to make a peach pie for guests who are coming over on Saturday. In addition, you won't be able to enjoy the fresh peaches during the winter months. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to keep your peaches lasting a bit longer.
Instructions
1. Put each peach in its own sandwich-size plastic zipper bag once it is fully ripe, and place it in your refrigerator. This extends the life of the peaches by one to three days.
2. Wait for your peaches to ripen. Wash them off. Peel away the skin and remove the pits. Slice the peaches and sprinkle sugar over them. Set them in a container suitable for the freezer, and freeze for up to 10 to 12 months.
3. Can your raw peaches. Leave the skin on, but cut them in half to remove the pits. Set five peaches in a 1-qt. canning jar. Bring 3 cups of sugar and 6 cups of water to a boil to make a syrup. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring often. Cover the peaches with the syrup while it is still hot and screw on your canning lid. Place the can in a boiling-water bath canner for 25 minutes, following the heating instructions that came with your boiling-water bath canner. This canning method is used with fruits and kills any bacteria in the jar or the peaches.
