Triple sec is an orange-flavored liqueur that gives this cocktail it's signature flavor. Invented in France in 1834, the original Combier triple sec is still made with sun dried orange peel from Haiti steeped in alcohol in vintage copper pots. Although "sec" means "dry" or not sweet in French, the term here means "distilled" three times.
Instructions
1. Roll a whole orange on the counter or cutting board, pressing it with the palm of your hand to release the juices inside or microwave the orange for 10 to 12 seconds.
2. Cut the orange in half and remove the seeds. Use a reamer and squeeze the juice into a small pitcher. Juice one orange for each cocktail.
3. Fill a highball glass half-full with crushed ice. Add vodka. Use citrus flavored vodka, depending on personal preference. Pour in Triple Sec.
4. Pour in freshly squeezed orange juice. Add a splash of ginger ale. Stir well. Garnish with an orange twist or generous slice of fresh orange. Serve with a straw.
5. Allow guests to sweeten to taste. Have on hand simple syrup, sugar or artificial sweetener.
6. Use fresh mint to garnish the cocktail for a variation on the classic. Top off the drink with a small bit of mint with 2 or 3 leaves attached.
