Pick A Riesling Wine

Riesling is made from what are considered some of the greatest white wine grapes in the world. Riesling is an unassuming wine from the Rhein and Mosul river valleys of Germany, and it is a wine that possesses remarkable versatility by being sweet and delicate, simple and complex, and spicy and fruity.

Instructions

1. Get to know the two types of Riesling. Johannisberg and White Riesling are considered to be the only true types of this white wine.

2. Know the overall flavors of Riesling. The predominant characteristics of all Rieslings are forward fruit flavors, often of peaches and apricots, and crisp, slight flinty (the mineral) undertones.

3. Understand the term Auslese. Riesling labeled Auslese have the lowest natural sugar content and are the least sweet of higher quality Riesling.

4. Learn about Beerenauslese. Riesling with this label have a medium level of natural sugar content and have a well-balanced level of sweetness and acidity.

5. Comprehend Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling labels with this long moniker have the highest natural sugar content and are considered to be the sweetest of all Riesling.

6. Discover the imposters that pose as Riesling. The most common are Grey Riesling, Chauce Grey, Walschriesling and Missouri Riesling. These wines are most often made by a Riesling grape clone. They are not considered true Riesling and have contributed to the downfall of Riesling's reputation.
