What Are Some Slightly Sweet White Wines

Some slightly sweet white wines make a good accompaniment to cheese.

White wines that are slightly sweet can have a variety of food pairings that drier red and white wines cannot. They can be more versatile and accompany many exotic and spicy Chinese, Indian and Thai dishes that do no pair well with other wines. Riesling, for instance, is one of the few wines that goes well with chocolate. Gewurztraminer can be served as an aperitif and accompaniment to many cheeses.

Riesling

Riesling is a slightly sweet, white wine that is somewhat spicy and characterized by its fresh, floral aroma. It can also have aromas of fresh apples and honey. Riesling pairs well with fish or seafood, and is one of several white wines that can accompany spicy Asian dishes as well as fish and seafood.

Gewurztraminer

Gewurztraminer is a white wine with a touch of spicy sweetness and fruity flavors of peaches and ripe apples. Its spicy aromas and full flavors make it a popular choice for Asian cuisine and an accompaniment to strong cheeses. Gewurztraminer is often served an an aperitif.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is a very fruity white wine originally from the Loire valley of France where it is called Vouvray, and is now also produced in California and South Africa. It has fresh, floral aromas of honeysuckle and honey, with melon flavors that make it pair well with fish and seafood.

Viognier

This slightly sweet and relatively unknown white wine comes from the Rhone Valley of southern France and now California. Viognier is known for its bouquet of honeysuckle, citrus blossoms, ripe melon and peaches. The highly aromatic and fruity flavors of Viognier make it a good complement to seafood or chicken dishes. It can also pair well with Asian cuisine.
