Warm Up Mulling Spices

Mulling spices add a delightful zip to apple cider.

Mulling spices may contain a variety of different spices and flavorings designed to add a distinctive flavor to beverages. With cinnamon, cloves and orange peel as some of the most common mulling spice ingredients, adding this delightful combination of spices to warm beverages can transform a standard beverage into a stellar treat. Warm up mulling spices as you warm a beverage, and the flavors will blend deliciously.

Instructions

1. Cut a 6-inch square of cheesecloth.

2. Place approximately 2 tablespoons of mulling spice into the center of the cheesecloth.

3. Bring the ends of the cheesecloth up and together around the mulling spices, and twist the edges of the cheesecloth to make a tight bundle.

4. Tie the cheesecloth tightly with a short length of string to keep the mulling spices inside the cheesecloth.

5. Pour the beverage you wish to flavor with mulling spices into the stockpot. Flavor about 1 quart of liquid with 2 tablespoons of mulling spices. If you wish to flavor more liquid, make additional bundles of mulling spice in squares of cheesecloth.

6. Add the mulling spice bundles to the liquid in the stockpot.

7. Place the stockpot onto the stove top and set the burner to medium-high. Warm and stir the liquid with the mulling spices until the liquid simmers -- just under a boil. Simmer the liquid and the mulling spices for 20 minutes.

8. Remove the mulling spice bundles and squeeze the cheesecloth bundle over the stockpot to extract as much flavor as possible from the mulling spices. Turn the heat down to low to keep the liquid warm.
