Make A Football Cake

Bake a loaf cake following the directions on a boxed mix.

Honor your favorite sports fan with a special football cake he’ll appreciate. It’s an imaginative addition to any birthday party or sporting event, such as a Super Bowl get-together or your child's football team celebration. Show off your creativity and bake the cake at home to add your own personal touches.

Instructions

1. Bake a loaf-pan cake using a boxed mix. Let it cool before removing from the pan and placing on a cake platter.

2. Carve the loaf cake to the shape of a football.

Carve the cake with a bread knife to resemble the shape of the top half of a football. Shape the football slightly pointed but with rounded ends on the right and left sides. Trim the top edges off the long sides to round the top of the football. You have your football shape.

3. Cover the cake solid with milk chocolate icing.

Frost the cake completely with the milk-chocolate icing.

4. Mash the white tootsie rolls flat lengthwise with a rolling pin. Connect four to create a stripe 1 inch wide and 7 inches long and the other four for a second stripe. If necessary, heat the candy in the microwave for a second to help flatten. Lay the stripes 2 1/2 inches from each end across the whole cake. Place the white jelly beans for the laces in the center top--one vertical, one horizontal, one vertical, one horizontal, one vertical, one horizontal.

5. Put 3 cups of flaky coconut into a bowl with a couple drops of green food coloring and stir with a fork until all the coconut is green for the grass. This goes all around the cake on the tray to represent the grass on a field.
