Make Carrot Shreds

Make Carrot Shreds

Shredded carrots are a versatile vegetable product that can be used in desserts, cold salads and hot dishes with equally good results. You can buy carrots pre-shredded and packaged if you want to save time or if you simply don't think you can make them yourself; however, commercial carrot shreds typically cost significantly more than if you shred the vegetable yourself. You can transform a whole large carrot into fine shreds at home with no special equipment.

Instructions

1. Slice horizontally across the top of each carrot to remove the green stem. Drag a vegetable peeler vertically down the length of each carrot to remove the tough outer peel.

2. Position a box grater on a flat, steady work surface. Grip a carrot firmly at the top and place the end onto the side of the box grater with large grates, near the top of the grater.

3. Press the carrot end firmly against the grates. Move the carrot in an up-and-down motion, maintaining constant pressure the entire time.

4. Grate until enough carrot is shredded that your hand is around one to two inches away from the surface of the grater. Continue the process with any additional carrots.

5. Lift up the box grater and set it aside. Use the shredded carrots immediately or transfer them into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for two to three days for the best results.
