Snack Foods That Do Not Need Refrigeration

Snacks, eat 'em or they're gone.

Snacks are useful portions of food smaller than meals that help restore energy without overfilling. Some snacks may be used as base ingredients and combined to form other snacks, such as trail mix. Snacks that do not require refrigeration can be taken almost anywhere.

Crackers

Available in a multitude of shapes, textures and flavors, due to varying base ingredients or secondary ingredients, the cracker is a crunchy snack often made from grains, such as rice or wheat, and is classified as a flatbread because it isn't leavened.

Dried Fruit

Commonly available dried fruit ranges from apricots, raisins, plums and cranberries to cherries. Fruit, such as raspberries, blueberries, papaya, strawberries and bananas, are also dried and sold. Other flavors may be added to the dried fruit.

Jerky

Jerky is made from thinly sliced meat that is marinated and cured via the drying or smoking method. It may be salted. Types of meat used to make jerky range from beef, turkey, pork, salmon and tuna to goat, elk, alligator, deer, bison, kangaroo, moose, kudu and springbok.

Nuts

Nuts commonly sold in stores include almonds, pecans, pistachios, cashews and walnuts. Snack forms of nuts include the roasted form, roasted and sugared with cinnamon, salted and chocolate-covered.

Peanuts

One of the most common legumes is the peanut. There are several varieties of peanut, including Spanish, Valencia, Runner and Virginia. Peanuts may be roasted or salted, or both, and are sold as is or coated with a candy coating.

Pretzels

Not to be confused with the soft pretzel, the snack pretzel is a savory, crunchy wheat-based item that has a golden-brown glazed surface and are usually formed as sticks and a twisted shape similar to a heart. Most commonly lightly coated with salt, pretzels may be candy-coated or coated with savory flavorings, such as Dijon mustard.

Seeds

Two commonly eaten seeds are soy nuts and sunflower seeds. These seeds have similar preparations to nuts, such as roasting, salting and coating, with a savory flavor for soy nuts and sunflower seeds, and roasting, salting and candy coating for sunflower seeds.

Chips

Corn chips and potato chips are crunchy, thin snacks. These chips may be baked or deep fried and, in the case of potato chips, kettle-cooked. Other chips can include grain-based chips or sweet potato chips. Chips, like crackers, are produced in a plethora of flavors and shapes, having other ingredients added to them. They may be used for dipping.
