Order Wisely At A Mexican Restaurant

Order Wisely at a Mexican Restaurant

For some reason, the average person thinks that Mexican restaurants are a fattening, bloating trap--for the hangover moments, the PMS moments or when you need comfort food and simply don't give a damn. Well, this isn't the case. In fact, Mexican restaurants are filled with brightly colored vegetables, good investment foods and easy, healthy choices. Just follow these easy steps and make a plan.

Instructions

1. Order club soda and a Skinnygirl Margarita to start with (see Resources below for a link to my recipe). If you opt for the frozen version, you might as well eat nothing at all (you will be drinking your dinner calories).

* A more calorie-friendly restaurant version of the Skinnygirl Margarita consists of clear tequila on the rocks, a splash of that frozen mix from the machine and a squeeze of lime. Now you can feel like you're participating!

2. Ration the tortilla chips by putting a few on your plate and separating your portion from the basket. Have a few with guacamole. Digging into the basket is a disaster. Or even better, ask for a corn tortilla and make your own little salsa-guacamole creation.

3. For the entree, order shrimp, chicken or steak fajitas for your protein. Skip most of the sour cream and skip the tortillas (if you already had chips). If you did invest in a tortilla earlier, then have the fajitas using only salsa and a bit of guacamole as your topping. Leave off the cheese and sour cream. A spoonful of black beans on the side is a much better alternative.

4. Black bean soup and a grilled Mexican chicken salad sans the fried shell is another good choice.

5. Mexican desserts aren't worth it; if you're anything like me, you'll choose alcohol over dessert.
