Toast Garlic On The Stove For Quick Roasted Garlic Flavor

Roasting garlic on your stove requires cloves rather than heads.

Roasted garlic's mild and somewhat sweet flavor often makes it palatable even to those who do not typically enjoy garlic. Unfortunately, the roasting process -- at least when traditionally done in the oven -- takes up to 45 minutes. While you can roast garlic in a microwave, doing so properly requires a special terra cotta garlic roaster. If you do not have one, or simply need to use your microwave to cook another dish, your best alternative may be to roast garlic on the stove.

Instructions

1. Separate your garlic from heads into cloves, and then peel each clove. The peeling process is easier if you slice the bottom of each clove off with a sharp knife.

2. Measure the garlic, and then measure out an equal amount of olive oil. For example, if you want to roast 1 cup of peeled garlic cloves, you also need 1 cup of olive oil.

3. Pour the olive oil and peeled garlic cloves into a pan. Heat the mixture over medium heat until the oil simmers and then reduce the heat to a level that keeps the oil at a very gentle simmer.

4. Stir the garlic cloves every minute or two as you simmer them. Within a few minutes, they should be noticeably softening and turning slightly brown. Continue to cook them until they reach your desired level of doneness. Depending on the number of cloves you are roasting and the size of the pan, this should take 5 to 15 minutes.

5. Remove the garlic from the oil and use as desired.
