Identify A Pimento Pepper

Spanish olives are traditionally stuffed with red pimento.

Pimento peppers are sweet peppers often used for canning and pickling. To ensure that you have correctly identified the pepper, cut a small piece and taste it. Similar varieties peppers may meet the size, shape and color requirements, but are hot. Pimento peppers are sweet and red when they are ripe, but young pimentos will be green, turning a dark orange before they fully ripen.

Instructions

1. Lay the pimento pepper on a solid surface and place a ruler next to it. It should measure 3 to 4 inches long.

2. Turn the ruler and place it at the widest part of the pepper, at the top, to measure the width. The width should measure 2 to 2 1/2 inches.

3. Hold the pepper in front of you with the stem at the top. Examine the shape of the pepper. It should be rounded on both sides, tapering to a cone at the bottom, giving it an overall heart shape. If it is shaped like a heart, the pepper is likely a pimento pepper.

4. Cut off a piece of pepper to taste and confirm that it is a pimento pepper. If it tastes mild and sweet, similar to a bell pepper, it is a pimento pepper.
