Import Italian Wine

Importing Italian wine is a lengthy and complex process.

Authentic Italian wine produced from vineyards in Italy is a commodity that many restaurant owners are interested in providing to their guests. If you are a restaurant owner or individual wishing to import Italian wine, you first need to be aware of and comply with your state's import restrictions as well as any restrictions in place from the United States Department of Agriculture, which monitors the importing of products to America.

Instructions

Import Italian Wine to the United States for Commercial Use

1. Apply for an Importer's Basic Permit from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) by filling out and submitting TTB Form 5100.24, which is available on the TTB's website. A link to this form is included in the references. If you are a first time importer, you must also submit a letter of intent with the Italian producers of the wine you are seeking to import. The form is extensive and requires you to enter your Employer Identification Number, owner information and residence history.

2. Complete an Alcohol Dealer Registration form (TTB Form 5630.5(d)) after your application for an Importer's Basic Permit is approved and you receive your permit. This form is also available on TTB's website and a link to it is included in the references. Fill out the form and mail it to TTB.

3. Obtain a TTB-issued Certificate Label of Approval (COLA) for each type of Italian wine you wish to import. Do this by filing an Application for Certification/Exemption of Label/Bottle Approval (TTB Form 5100.31) with the TTB's Advertising, Labeling and Formulation Division. Fill out the form and mail it to TTB. This form is also available on TTB's website and a link to it is included in the references.
