Invisible fence opinions

Invisible fence opinions

Researching invisible and wireless fence applications. People I've talked to love or hate them; not much middle ground. We recently adopted a 90 pound German Sheppard/hound mix and he needs to have some running room. We don't really want to fence in 2 acres and to do less will look funny plus spoil the overall view. I've heard all of the detractors from the it's too cruel camp, so skip right to the technical comments. Besides, a few zaps or 'corrections' are better than getting hit by a car or shot at by hunters in the woods. Tree I had a friend that had one. Worked great unless the dog got very excited. He would then run right past the wire and when he calmed down and wanted to come back home, he couldn't without getting zapped so he would effectively be fenced OUT of his yard. If you have a dog that even might think about maybe chewing on somebody, I would not use the fenceless fence. There is nothing other than the dogs obediance to the shock to prevent him from getting to a neighbor kid. With enough excitement or agitation, many dogs will cross while disregarding the shocks,. Hi Tree, Not sure what type of technical comments you are looking for, but I've read of batteries wearing out, skin contact not good due to thick fur that isn't shaved and collars falling off. I would recommend using this type of containment system when you are out in the yard with the dog and not to leave the dog unattended. You may want to get one with adjustable shock levels for a large dog. Some dogs have a higher pain threshold then others. You might find this helpful. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/fences1.html Newt Every now and then we have one of our puppy buyers ask about that. We very strongly discourage them. I have two reasons for not liking them in addition to equipment failure. It is not all that uncommon for a dog to run through the fence. Then, if they want to get back, they can't. The other problem is that it doesn't keep other dogs (or other critters) out. I agree that an invisible fence looks a lot nicer than any other type of fence, but for a smaller breed like we have, it just isn't an option for us. We have one installed to enforce our chain link fence (for some reason we end up with dogs that dig under the fence). This has worked well for us. Our dog has actually learned that if the gate is closed do not approach the fence, even without the colar on. The system we have also has caps on the collar that protects the dog from the shock, so that they only get a sound warning. One item I found that might be of a better solution for a open space like you have is a wireless system. These systems have a transmittter at the house. If the dog goes further then the signal is sent they then get the shock. This eliminates the problem of the dog being forced out. Instead they are encouraged to go home while they are outside to the transmitters range. Multiple transmitters can also be used to create a larger area.
