In rural areas with no municipal sewer systems, homes are required to use septic tanks. These units are very simple and, under normal circumstances, very reliable. The septic tank contains few components, but each component is vital to the safe and efficient operation of the overall system. The septic tank baffle is one of the primary components.
Location
A septic tank has an inlet and an outlet, each on opposite ends of the tank. The baffles are located inside the tank just in front of each of these.
Function
When water/waste flows into the septic tank, it is important that is remain in the tank and not flow directly to the outlet. Baffles dispense the water/waste toward the bottom of the tank and prevent it from moving to the outlet too quickly.
Construction
Most septic tank baffles are made of metal and are bolted to the sides of the septic tank. When the tank is emptied, these baffles should be inspected to be certain there is not excessive rust or deterioration.
Easy Repair Options
If the baffles have become rusty or damaged, rather than purchasing a new tank, it is possible to install pipe tees at both the inlet and outlet ports. The tees will divert the water/waste in much the same manner as the baffles.
Lifespan
You can increase the useful lifespan of your entire septic system by reducing the amount of water that enters the system. The average person uses 50 to 75 gallons of water per day, most of this in the bathroom; 40 percent of that water usage is from the toilet, while 30 percent is from bathing/showering. Monitor your water usage and you can save money on water as well as on costly repairs to your septic system.
