What Are Slotted Spoons Used For

A slotted spoon has many uses other than cooking.

A slotted spoon is a common kitchen utensil that has many uses. These spoons feature holes or slits in their bowls that allow unwanted liquids to pass through them while still retaining any solids within the dish. Available in various sizes, large ladle-style slotted spoons are most often used in cooking while smaller table-sized slotted spoons are used to eat dishes such as canned fruit.

Drain Foods

A slotted spoon is often used to drain the juice or liquid from foods that were used during the cooking process, particularly when those liquids do not add to the food's flavor. Canned items, including green beans and corn, are packaged in the juices that they are usually cooked with; however, these juices do not positively affect the flavor of the food and should be drained before serving.

Remove Ice

For a large gathering or party, you may decide to use a punch bowl for an easily served drink. Punch bowls are often decorated with ice cubes that contain fruit or flowers. These cubes are functional as they cool the punch, and beautiful as the fruit or flowers can be seen through the ice. Unfortunately, these additives could negatively affect the taste of the drink and should be removed before all of the ice around them melts. Use a slotted spoon to remove the ice cubes while allowing the punch to drain back into the punch bowl.

Remove Foods

Slotted spoons can also be used to remove foods from hot cooking liquids, such as stock or oil. These spoons allow the oil or stock to drain away from the foods and back into the cooking pot. Another advantage to using a slotted spoon in this situation is that the handle keeps your hands away from the boiling liquids.

Absinthe Ritual

A decorative slotted spoon is used during the absinthe ritual. Absinthe is a very strong spirit that is derived from distilled wormwood, fennel and anise. This spirit is prepared by placing a decorative slotted spoon over a glass containing a small amount of absinthe. A sugar cube is placed on the spoon and cold water is poured over the cube to dissolve it into the absinthe.

Bubble Blower

A mixture of 1/4 cup corn syrup, 4 cups water and 1 cup dish soap makes a great bubble solution. Consider using household items to create differently shaped bubbles. A slotted spoon is a useful tool for a young child who may not yet be able to blow through a wand. As she swings the spoon, the air pushes through the slots on the spoon to make the bubbles.
