Fire proof sealant around glass fireplace door unit

Fire proof sealant around glass fireplace door unit

I applied a heat resistant caulk type sealant around the gaps between the brick and my fireplace door unit to keep the smoke from coming into our front room. The caulking settled down a bit into the area between the brick and the glass door enclosure. Is it supposed to settle down in there to form the seal? Or should I let it cure and add a bit more to fill the gap level with the top of the unit? Thanks. You shouldn't have any smoke coming into your living area with proper venting. Have a certified chimney sweep check out the draft. They can do it fairly quickly and advise you as to what you should do if there is an occlusion. Even if you didn't have smoke, you will have heat, and that is what has caused the caulk to sink down. Here again, you shouldn't have to caulk the door frame to the brick. I had a chimney sweep check it out last year, he noted that the firebox isn't correctly sized and this is causing the smoke to come into the living space. A smoke guard was recommended, which I will be adding, the heat caulk was mostly as additional protection. I was just wondering if it is supposed to be flush with the edge of the enclosure, but it if isn't normally required I'll just leave it as is. It burns a good fire and it's not a large amount of smoke, mostly when a fire is burning out. Thanks. Yeah, it usually happens as the heat vortex dies and the fire is going out. If the caulk is heat type caulk, I would want it flush, and after the first application sinks in, you may have a better shot at installing a flush layer.
