Troubleshoot A Payne Furnace

Troubleshoot your appliances and fix the problems yourself to save money.

The cold weather is not far away, and we will be shutting down our air conditioners and cranking up the heaters. If you have a Payne furnace, you know how well it keeps your home warm. However, from time to time trouble creeps up and requires your attention. For instance, when the furnace only blows cool air, it makes bumping and loud noises, or sometimes does not start.

Instructions

1. Check your air filters if you find that the fan is constantly running and yet producing only cool air. The problem is most likely your air filters are clogged. If they are, it is like putting a barrier between the heat and fan, so that all that you feel is cool air. Checking and changing your air filters every 30 days will help in maximizing the hot air circulating throughout your home. In addition, a clogged air filter means that the air that is circulating is filled with dust particles that can lead to illness. Regular maintenance is important to continue circulating warm air, and to provide cleaner air for the family to breathe.

2. Turn on your thermostat. Is your furnace cycling through correctly, or does it begin cycling through on and off? If the furnace is cycling and not producing heat, it may be that you have a faulty thermostat and it is time to replace it.

3. Check to see if your power switch is on. If it looks like your furnace is not providing heat, a possibility is that there is an overload with the electrical system. Also, check the circuit breaker to see if a fuse is blown or if the switch is tripped to the off position. Once you have checked these areas and you have determined your thermostat is working properly, your next consideration should be the thermocouple. This is a safety control, and should be in the proper position next to the flame. The correction may simply be replacing the thermocouple because it has worn out.
