Audi Fsi Technology

FSI stands for Fuel Straight Injection and is Audi's term for its proprietary direct fuel injection system used in modern models of the A3, A4 and A6 automobiles.

Direct Fuel Injection vs. Fuel Straight Injection

Direct fuel injection is a relatively modern technique in auto engineering where fuel is injected directly into the engine cylinders. Before the advent of direct fuel injection, cars used port injection where fuel is shot into the engine's intake manifold. FSI changes the direct fuel injection process by modifying placement of the fuel injectors relative to the pistons and adding a second fuel pump.

Injector Positioning

The FSI technology positions the injector to align with the shape of the piston's top. Doing so provides a more efficient dispersal and thus more efficient combustion when fuel hits the cylinder chamber.

Dual Fuel Pumps

FSI uses two fuel pumps to ensure even distribution of fuel among the cylinders. The primary fuel pump operates when the engine is in use. The second fuel pump is smaller and operates at a higher pressure than the primary pump. The secondary pump is used automatically when the FSI system decides it needs an on-demand boost to the fuel level being delivered to the injectors.
