Recondition Pencil Rubber Erasers

Dried-out rubber erasers are a common source of office frustration.

Correcting a pencil mark should be a simple enough task, but sometimes a good eraser is nowhere to be found. Through trial and error, most people learn that old, dark and dried-out erasers never erase a pencil mark and usually make the problem much worse: they either tear the paper or soil it with a permanent red streak. If your desk drawer is full of perfectly good pencils with rigid, dead erasers, you may be able to salvage them with common household objects.

Instructions

1. Rub the pencil eraser against an abrasive ink eraser. Sometimes a dirty eraser surface prevents proper erasing, and cleaning off the smudges with an ink eraser can solve the problem.

2. Hold the pencil eraser over a wastebasket with the eraser end facing away from you. Scrape sandpaper over the eraser or whittle the eraser with a craft knife so the shavings fall into the wastebasket. If the outside is brittle, there may still be usable eraser inside.

3. Cover the eraser with an eraser cap, if the rubber is too far gone to repair with the previous two methods. That way, you can still use the pencil normally.
