Calculate Crown Molding Length

Calculate Crown Molding Length

If you want to upgrade your home at a reasonable cost, installing crown molding is a good option. You can even opt to install crown molding yourself. If you do so, however, you must be sure that the molding is cut to the correct length. Crown molding that is too short can leave unattractive gaps in the corners of your walls that will draw attention for the wrong reasons.

Instructions

1. Use a measuring tape to measure the length of your walls from corner to corner. Make your measurements at ceiling height.

2. Write down the length of each corner-to-corner measurement.

3. Mark the length on the back of each piece of crown molding with a pencil.

4. Set your miter saw to cut at a 45-degree angle.

5. Cut each piece of crown molding to the appropriate length. The length of your walls should be used to measure the long point of the angle of each piece of molding.

6. Hold each piece of crown molding flush with the wall at the ceiling to ensure that the piece will fit properly before nailing it to the wall.

Tips Warnings

If your walls have outer corners, the outer corner should be used to determine the length from the end of a piece of crown molding to the short point of its 45 degree angle.

When cutting the crown molding, position it backward and upside down on the saw. This will give you the most accurate cuts.
