Adjust The Timing In A Chevy Silverado

Adjusting the timing on a Chevy Silverado truck requires special tools and a working knowledge of engine mechanics. Adjusting the timing on a Chevy Silverado is common for installing aftermarket performance parts or for better fuel economy. A Chevy Silverado with a powertrain control module or PCM requires professional programming not addressed in this guide.

Instructions

1. Locate the crank pulley at the bottom front of the engine and remove and dirt or grime to expose the timing marks. Start the Chevy Silverado engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn off any accessories such as lights, the radio and climate controls.

2. Plug the vacuum hose on a carburized model with tape or a gold tee. Disconnect the timing connector on the right side of the distributor on fuel-injected trucks.

3. Connect the timing light to the truck battery if necessary then to the number one ignition wire located at the front driver's side of the engine. Start the truck and allow it to settle into a steady idle speed.

4. Point the timing light at the crank pulley timing marks, taking care not to touch the fan. Adjust the timing by loosening the distributor mounting nuts or clip, turning the distributor slowly until the crank pulley marks line up with the middle line of the timing light.

5. Tighten the distributor mounting bolts or snap the clip into place. Recheck the timing with the timing light to ensure it didn't move when tightened. Unplug the vacuum lone or reconnect the timing connector. Shut the engine off and remove the timing light before pushing the number one ignition wire back in place.

Tips Warnings

High idle is a common problem on the Chevy Silverado truck and adjusting the idle control is necessary prior to adjusting the timing in these cases.
