Glue Sand To Wood

Sand can lend wooden projects a natural look.

Gluing sand to a wooden project can add texture, depth and personality. You can create a concrete textured finish, create a sculpted sand dune or even create a powdery snow effect using sand to finish your wooden projects. Sand is available in many colors and granule sizes, allowing you to further customize the affects that you seek. Sand is inexpensive, easy to use, and easy to clean up, making it a preferable way to add extra detail to your wooden projects.

Instructions

Basic Sand on Wood Method

1. Sandpaper your project. Not only will you not be able to sandpaper your project after gluing sand to it, but a light sanding will allow the glue to adhere more effectively to your project. Use fine- or medium-grained sandpaper for best results. Sandpaper can be purchased at most hardware stores.

2. Coat the surface of your project with glue. White glue, tacky glue and wood glue will all work, but be sure to choose a glue that dries clear. You can also use spray-on epoxies made for wood or plastic. If your project is three dimensional, work on just one side at a time and allow it to dry fully before moving on to the next side. Glue and epoxies are available at craft stores.

3. Pour sand over the glue while it is still wet so that none of the glue is visible. Craft sand can be purchased at most craft stores, or you can use sand gathered from your own backyard or local beach.

4. Press the sand into the glue, using either your hands or a small paint roller. Allow the glue to dry.

5. Shake off excess sand. If there are bare patches, where the sand did not stick to the wood, apply a second layer of glue, or epoxy, and repeat steps three and four.

6. Repeat steps two through five with each side of your wooden project.

7. Spray your finished, and dry, project with sealant. The sealant will prevent the sand from flaking off of your wooden project.

Glue and Sand Mixture Method

8. Sandpaper your project with fine or medium grain sandpaper. Doing this to wooden projects before gluing sand to them will allow the glue to adhere more effectively to the wood.

9. Water down your white glue, tacky glue, or wood glue so that you have a mixture of one part glue to one part water.

10. Mix your sand into your watered down glue. Mix slowly, to prevent clumps of sand. One part sand to one part watered down glue is preferable. For example, if you have 1/2 cup of watered down glue, you should mix it with 1/2 cup of sand.

11. Spread your glue and sand mixture over the surface of your wooden project. You can use your hands or a paintbrush.

12. Sculpt the glue and sand mixture to create ridges, textures and other details. Allow the glue and sand mixture to dry.

Tips Warnings

Use a non-gloss sealant, rather than a gloss sealant, to give your sand a natural look.

Use solvent to remove excess oils from the surface of oily woods before attempting to glue sand to them. Wet a soft cloth with mineral spirits, wipe down the wood, and proceed with the gluing process as soon as the solvent is dry.

Use glue, sealants, and solvents only in well ventilated areas.

Clean up excess glue immediately. Glue is difficult to remove from wood once it has dried.
