Keep My Car From Freezing

Keep My Car From Freezing

Preventing your car from freezing in the winter months is essential if you live in an area with freezing temperatures. The biggest misconception is that antifreeze alone will not freeze. Manufacturers actually suggest you keep your coolant at 50 percent water and 50 percent antifreeze. This will prevent your vehicle from freezing during the harsh cold winters.

Instructions

Winterizing Your Vehicle

1. Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator. Loosen the petcock valve to drain the coolant. Ensure you have a pan underneath to catch the coolant. Close the petcock valve when the coolant is through draining.

2. Twist the radiator cap off the radiator. Push down on the cap and twist it counter-clockwise to remove.

3. Pour the contents of a gallon container of anti-freeze in the radiator. When the container is empty fill it with water. Pour the water into the radiator. Rotate filling the radiator with antifreeze and then water until the radiator is full.

4. Start the vehicle. Turn the heater on and allow the vehicle to warm up. This will circulate the coolant through the motor. Do not put the radiator cap on at this time. Allow the vehicle to run for 15 minutes.

5. Turn off the vehicle. Inspect your coolant level. Top off with antifreeze if needed. Screw the cap back on the radiator.

Tips Warnings

You should winterize your vehicle prior to flushing it out. This will ensure you have fresh coolant in the system and all the debris in the radiator and engine rails are flushed out and not contaminating the new coolant.

You can purchase a test kit at your auto parts store that will tell you the freezing point of your coolant mixture if you have any doubt.

Use extreme caution when working around the coolant system. Ensure the vehicle is cooled down as the coolant gets very hot and could result in burns if handled incorrectly.

Ensure all your coolant is contained and contact your recycling center for disposal. Antifreeze is hazardous to small animals and children.
